Barking Dog Training has been helping owners train their dogs for over 40 years. The club was first started up by Dennis Guiver, with help from Alistair and Clive at St Margaret’s Hall, then moving to St. Erkenwalds Hall and finally to the current venue at Neasham Road, Dagenham.
Training was very different in those days mostly check chains as collars and shouting. Nowadays training is very different it is all done with treats, toys and fun as rewards.
When Barking and Dagenham Council used to hold street Carnivals, the club entered under the Voluntary Section, this was great fun, all the owners and dogs dressed up in whatever theme had been chosen for that year, winning Best Float nearly every year, this was lots of work, decorating the lorry and making costumes for humans and dogs but great fun and raised lots of money for charity. The low loader lorries with drivers were lent to the club for the day by local companies, which we were very grateful for.
There is a committee headed by the club Chairman Keith Stephens, meetings are held throughout the year to organise Companion Dog Shows to raise money for many charities which over the past years have included: Guide Dogs for the Blind, Battersea Dog and Cats Home, The Dogs Oldies Club, Air Ambulance, Haven House Children’s Hospice, Help4Heroes, Orsett Wild Life and many smaller local charities, these shows are open to all dog owners to have a fun day and hopefully win some Rosettes.
The current trainer is Wendy Collins who has been with the club for many years and is helped by Valerie King, Sally Hammond and Lesley Brown. They give up their time to help owners have well behaved puppies and dogs, which is very rewarding to see how all the puppies and dogs progress.
The club has been running The Kennel Club Good Citizen Dog Scheme, for pet owners since it started in the 90’s and have had many puppies and dogs pass Puppy Assessment and Bronze, Silver and Gold Awards. Lots of current members have worked up from their Puppy Assessment to gain their Bronze, Silver and Gold Awards and many have returned again with their new puppies and dogs.
If you are interested in joining the club why not give us a call.
